10 Panicky Questions Moms of Homeschool Seniors Ask Us
Each time my homeschool high schoolers have hit senior year, I have a minor panic:
- Have we covered enough academics?
- Are they college ready?
- Did they have enough extracurricular experience to develop interests and talents?
- Are they settled enough in their faith?
- Do they have enough friends?
- Can they get a REAL job?
- And so on…and so on…
But I’ve learned not to dwell there too long. I’ve learned the answers to the questions:
- Have we covered enough academics?
- You never cover enough academics; there’s always more you can never get to! Teach your teens to love questioning, love exploring, love starting new things, love learning. Then they can continue their entire lives.
- Here’s a post with some helpful tips on plugging any major holes on the transcript.
- Also listen to this episode of Homeschool Highschool Podcast: Month-by-month through Senior Year for College-bound Students.
- OR for Career-bound teens, listen to this episode about Senior Year for them.
- Are they college ready?
- They are ready enough. We have time to review some skills. Senior year is a good time to evaluate any holes on the transcript you may find or holes in life skills. You can’t hit everything but you can get the big ones.
- One skill many teens need to cover is Professional Writing Skills. They need to be able to create things like resumes, professional bios, complaint letters and more.
Professional Writing Guide is also included in the Senior Year Writing Guide.
- Did they have enough extracurricular experience to develop interests and talents?
- Same answer as the first question! Still working on it? Here’s a post to help.
- Are they settled enough in their faith?
- I’ve learned that I must trust God with the journey…and do some Apologetics review.
- Do they have enough friends?
- They have friends now. They have social skills, they’ll use them to make new friends at college or career. If they are not feeling very confident, download our 10 necessary social skills curriculum AND show them this video.
Now that those questions are out of the way, we can concentrate on understanding the rhythms of homeschool senior year. They are different than other years, of course, because the future is looming! But don’t worry, you and your senior will be fine!
