Homeschool Highschool Podcast Episode 56: Filmmaking Elective for Homeschool Highschoolers

Teens LOVE filmmaking! They’ll love earning a filmmaking credit on their homeschool highschool transcripts!

A great elective on the transcript adds SPARKLE to the transcript and sparkle to the teens’ lives- inspiring them and bringing out their creativity. That’s what a filmmaking credit does- even if you and your teens are novice filmmakers.

Join Sabrina and her homeschool graduate son, Sam, for lots of how-to’s and tips on how to earn a filmmaking credit on the homeschool transcript!

Sabrina and Sam discuss the basics of filmmaking for teens, how to find resources, where to look for inspiration, and how to keep it fun while helping students keep a healthy expectation (beginners do not have the equipment or expertise or connections to win Oscars).

Basics of filmmaking credits can include:

  • Scriptwriting
  • Camera and lighting basics
  • Sound basics
  • Filming skills
  • Editing skills

Resources are plentiful and often not-expensive:

  • Editor’s cuts and extra materials on movie dvds
  • Library
  • Internet
  • Also, be sure to ask around church, family or friends. Sometimes networking will give teens some opportunities with real people in the field that you might not have thought about until you (and they) started making connections.

Sam and his friends (and moms) started a homeschool filmmaking club while they were in high school. They met monthly, discussed filmmaking topics, shared excellent examples from film or YouTubes of the topic of the month, and worked on projects together. A couple of times a year, the club had a film-presentation night with families coming to watch the best of students’ films for that semester.
