5 Ways to Make Creative Writing Less Intimidating

Creative writing can be intimidating!

Don’t despair! You can give your homeschooling high schoolers some easy ways for making the process less scary and more FUN!

5 Ways to Make Creative Writing Less Intimidating

Creative Writing Ways to Make Less Intimidating

1. Teens often feel less intimidated if creative writing is done on computer rather than with paper and pencil.

Why is that? I don’t know. Perhaps it is simply more familiar, since so many of them spend hours each day in front of a screen.

2. Use a downloadable writing curriculum that can be stored right on the desktop or Kindle.

Each day, your homeschooler simply opens up the file. No books. It’s hip- thus less stressful.

3. When actually composing a writing assignment, such as a short story, a blank page on a screen is sometimes intimidating. So have them type at the top of the page:

  • Their name
  • The name of the assignment
  • The date

Three things they wish they were doing instead of creative writing (they can edit that out later, but it makes enough traffic on the screen that the “blank page fear” is usually overcome).

4. Have them print up only their rough draft, final draft, and rubrics.

Other preparatory assignments can be checked on screen. Again, this is hip- so takes a bit of the sting out of a writing assignment.

5. Celebrate the completion of each writing assignment

Hold a read-aloud or share with co-op friends or family.

Creative Writing: The Best Kept Secret of Composition Success, A creative writer who recently finished a unit on short story composition might be more prone to use a few narrative examples (examples that tell a story rather an example full of lists but no detail). This is good!
