Homeschool high schoolers love this project: an APA-Style Subcreation Myth/Fantasy Paper Guide.
Before C.S. Lewis wrote The Chronicles of Narnia and J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit, they created the backstory for the books. They called this the “subcreation”. This included:
- The lands where the story happened
- Basic histories of the place
- The people groups of those lands
- A brief look at the lives of the main characters
Teens love writing a myth-fantasy short story in the style of Lewis and Tolkien. Before they can create their story, they need to build their subcreation. One fun (and organized) way to make this subcreation is to use the APA-style research paper. We have used this format in our local homeschool co-ops and umbrella school classes, and teens tell us that it is a fun assignment!

When teens complete the paper they have their subcreation worked out, as well as a completed creative-writing APA-style research paper!
