Homeschooling these days includes an overwhelming amount of choices- including choices for watching movies in the Cinema Guides!
Some homeschool families still have VHS/DVD players and other families are streaming movies on their mobile devices. This is a great example of why we say there is NOT one right way to homeschool!
How hard is it to find the movies for our cinema guides?
Obviously the most economical way is to watch a DVD:
- borrow the DVD from a friend
- find a used copy at your local thrift store
- or use your library
Your local library might even be helpful even with digital formats.
- Kanopy is a website that provides streaming using your library card for access.
- Hoopla is another online service that libraries use. I would even suggest a chat with your local librarian about what services they can provide.
However, if you are looking for the easy button for one stop best online service to find all the movies, sadly, my research did not find that one button existed.
(Of course all these finding are subject to change as often the on-line world changes quickly!)
The closest I found for all the movies in one place was Amazon Prime
A few of the movies are included free with prime and the rest could be rented from $1.99 to $3.99 per movie. There is a time limit on how long you can rent the movies.
I did discover the ReelGood website
It allows you to search a movie title and then it provides the streaming services that include the movie for free or as part of their subscription.
You might find organizing your movies based on streaming websites more economical.
For instance, you might be able to take advantage of free month of Netflix and watch all the movies available there. Then the next month watch the movies available on Disney Plus.
If you are teaching these guides in co-op please refer to each streaming service on “group watching” to honor copyright.
- Co-ops handle watching the movies in different ways.
- Some (following copyright rules) will have a movie night to watch the movie Then meet during the school week to discuss the guide helpful.
- Many co-ops instruct teens to watch the movies at home, then get together to work through the Cinema Studies guide.
- Some co-ops create unit studies with the guides.
Of course, this is not exhaustive list of all places to find a physical DVD or even all the on-line serves but hopefully it helps you organize the best way to find the movies for your homeschool!
Cinema Studies for Literature Learning curriculum explores the important IDEAS of story-telling and the power stories have to shape individuals, groups of people, and even entire cultures using the visual medium of movies…all while earning high school credit!
