It is one of a parent’s most important jobs: helping our teens be ready to manage themselves. Many of these self-management skills they gain by watching us. But some skills are too important to leave to the sometime-randomness of our modeling. Some preparing for independence skills need to be addressed in official course-on-a-transcript form.

Courses to Prepare Teens for Independence
THREE of these must-have preparation for independence course are:
Courses to prepare teens for independence: Apologetics
Homeschool high schoolers usually have solid faith, but can they explain *why* to the nonbelievers they will meet?
Apologetics (defense of the faith) can be an intimidating topic- even to seminarians. What teens need is an apologetics curriculum that is simple, interesting, memorable, and gives them talking-points. That way they can have a meaningful conversation about Christianity with non-believers. (And how about FREE?)
Good Answers has many lessons in a curriculum that is great for launching teens into the world of defending their faith. Dr. Gerald Culley (professor emeritus of classics at University of Delaware) has made it his mission to give young people a simple, interesting, memorable, talking-point curriculum. AND they don’t even have to read it! The lessons are presented on voice over powerpoints.
Simply watch, take notes on points of interest, and discuss. Great preparation for independence! (In recent months, Dr. Culley has continued to create even MORE apologetics presentations and you can access all of them in our ebookstore. When your teen finishes the 15 included in this curriculum bundle, visit the apologetics page here for more excellent, free downloads!)
Courses to prepare teens for independence Financial Literacy

Homeschool high schoolers need to know more than budgeting and balancing a checking account. They need to understand risk-benefits of savings, investment, and insurance choices. They even need to look at cost-benefit of the college education that we’re pushing at them!
Teens need to interact with their curriculum in a way that is memorable, interesting, and discuss-able with parents and friends. A good curriculum needs more than just reading a
text and filling in some blanks. Interactive, must-think activities are best. You Tube videos and chasing links on good websites make this difficult topic engaging.
This is the interactive method used in Financial Literacy from a Christian Perspective. This is Financial Literacy that can truly prepare a teen for independence.
Courses to prepare teens for independence Career Exploration
Homeschool high schoolers need to know that God has plans for them. They need to
know the unique gifts and experiences that God created for them. When teens are settled in God-knowledge and self-knowledge, they are ready to take on career and service adventures.
A good Career Exploration curriculum includes a look at God’s will, gifts/talents, role models, experiences, values and more. These 7Sisters Career Exploration resources take teens on a journey through God-knowledge and self-knowledge. This is great preparation for independence!

Courses to Prepare Teens for Independence

Hi Rubi,
Thanks for explaining what your experience is like. While you might be a “nonbeliever” in the way we believe, we honor and respect you for your service, your motherhood and you as a fellow homeschooler. While we 7Sisters enjoy the tar out of being believers, you will never hear a judgmental word from us. In fact, if you watched the apologetics course, you would find that very thing. We want to talk about our faith in intelligent, non-judgmental ways. We believe that all have a right to be who they are and believe what they want…including you…including us. Blessings to you and yours.
I found this site through Pinterest hoping to find solid recommendations for my homeschooled teen. Immediately, the first recommendation is disappointing, since it assumes that the reader is raising a Christian teen. My child is not raised Christian nor are we interested, there is a whole community of homeschoolers who value family, kindness and education who either are “non believers” as you call us or practice faith but allow their children to think and choose for themselves and appreciate non secular materials. For the record with are believers of many principles just not your very specific view. It’s a shame how many children and families are dismissed by such labels. I hope someday you’ll grown past them.
I’m more than a “non believer”I’m a disabled Veteran, mother and my daughters are creatives, survivors, and helpers who don’t discriminate human beings by labels. We know many open minded individuals who don’t to feel the need to attack peoples religious faith unless it’s used as tools for hate.
